Overview

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a versatile, non-invasive therapy designed to improve skin tone and texture. At Apex Skin & Laser Clinic in Plymouth, Hayley utilises advanced medical-grade technology to target specific skin concerns, providing a safe and effective way to achieve a clearer, more youthful complexion.

IPL is a light-based treatment, often called a photofacial. Unlike a laser that uses one wavelength, IPL emits multiple wavelengths of light energy to treat the deeper layers of the skin without damaging the surface, making it ideal for sun damage and vascular issues.

What is it?

The device delivers gentle pulses of light that are absorbed by the melanin in dark spots or the haemoglobin in broken capillaries. This heat breaks down the unwanted pigment or collapses the visible vein. Your body then naturally clears the treated cells, leaving behind brighter skin and a more even, healthy-looking skin tone.

How does it work?

This treatment effectively reduces age spots, sun damage, and freckles. It also calms facial redness, treats rosacea, and shrinks broken red veins. Beyond pigmentation, the light energy stimulates collagen production to help refine pore size and smooth fine lines, giving your skin a rejuvenated, refreshed appearance.

IPL is most effective for light to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick scales I-III) with sun damage or redness. During your initial consultation, Hayley will assess your skin type and medical history to ensure this is the safest and most effective option for you.

Benefits

A cold gel is applied to the skin, and you will wear protective eyewear. You may feel a brief sensation like a flick of a rubber band. Sessions usually last 30 minutes. There is no downtime, though you may experience slight redness or darkened spots for a few days as the skin begins to heal.

Who is it suitable for?

Protecting your skin after IPL is essential for the best results. You must avoid direct sun exposure and wear a high-factor SPF daily. Hayley will provide a tailored aftercare plan, and for optimal, long-lasting results, a course of 3 to 5 treatments spaced several weeks apart is usually recommended.
